What it is

A licensed residence for two or more adults who need help with daily living but not continuous nursing. Staff are awake and on duty around the clock. Homes range from a four-bed house to a large building. The state inspects them about every 11 to 15 months.

Who it suits

Someone who cannot safely live alone, who needs help with bathing, dressing, meals and medications, and whose health does not require a nurse every day.

By county

Every county has its own page with the full list, its sources, and a download. The biggest first here; the full list of 159 is on the county index.

Ask these first

  1. Is the bed open today, and is it a shared or a private room?
  2. Who gives medications, and how is it recorded?
  3. What is in the resident agreement, and how much notice before a fee change?
  4. When was the last state inspection, and may I read it?

Questions families ask

Which personal care homes in Georgia take Medicaid?

CCSP and SOURCE pay for care in personal care homes of 24 beds or fewer; ICWP also places members in licensed homes. Each listing shows the programs the home is enrolled in as its own tag, and county pages count them. Medicaid never pays room and board; the resident pays that from income, usually keeping a small personal allowance.

What is the 24-bed rule?

Georgia's CCSP and SOURCE programs can only pay for care in a personal care home with 24 beds or fewer. We show bed count on every home, and larger homes are listed with a note that they cannot take those two programs.

How is a personal care home different from assisted living?

Both are licensed by the same state division. An assisted living community is a larger building, 25 beds or more, licensed under its own rule and allowed to do more medication administration. A personal care home is smaller and more like a house.

How do I check a home's license and inspections?

Every home on CareBegins links to its record on the Georgia Department of Community Health facility search, where license status and inspection reports are published. We show the date we last compared the listing with that record.
