Who owns CareBegins, who pays for it, and how we check what we publish

Every directory should say this on one page, in plain words. This is ours. If anything here changes, the change is dated at the bottom.

Who owns it

CareBegins is owned and published by Karavista LLC, a Georgia company. Karavista also publishes a magazine and newsletters for people who work in home and community care. CareBegins has no owner, investor or sponsor among the agencies, homes, centers, coordinators or software companies that appear on it.

Karavista is a separate company from Caryfy, which makes CareBravo, software that some agencies use to run their operations. Neither company owns any part of the other. The only link between that software and this site is the one described under connected listings: an agency that runs on it can connect its listing so that your message reaches it there. What that adds, and what it never changes, is on its own page. We say this here because a reader should not have to guess.

Who pays, and who cannot

Every listing is free, for every licensed or enrolled provider and coordinator in Georgia, whether or not they have ever heard of us. Nobody can pay to be listed first, to be listed at all, to get a badge, or to change a rating. Listings are in alphabetical order, always.

Karavista pays for CareBegins from its publishing business. It takes no referral fee, no per-lead fee and no commission from any provider. If that ever changes, this page will say so before it happens, and anything paid will be labeled where it appears, never only in a footer.

How we count

The number on our home page, the share of licensed providers we list, is the number of providers on this site divided by the number Georgia licenses or enrolls in the four types of care we cover. The denominator comes from the Department of Community Health facility lists (personal care homes, adult day centers, private home care providers), the Georgia Medicaid provider search, and the DBHDD provider list, each with its date. We publish the number because no other directory does, and because it tells you how much you might be missing. We update it monthly.

What "checked" means

When a listing shows a green mark and a date, a named person on our team looked at the state's own record on that date: the Department of Community Health facility search for licensed homes, centers and home care providers, the Georgia Medicaid provider search for Medicaid enrollment, and the DBHDD provider list for NOW and COMP services. We record what we saw, the date, and who looked, and we link to the record so you can look too.

We check again at least every three months, and sooner when a license is due to expire. If a check fails, the mark comes off the same day and the listing says why. A check is not a rating, an inspection or a recommendation; it means the license or enrollment was real on that date.

What "reported" means

Services, programs, languages, hours, prices, whether a provider has room, and who else pays all come from the provider. We label each one "reported by the provider" with the date they said it. We do not check them, and we say so next to each one. Room changes daily; always call.

How reviews work

  • A person reads every review before it is published. We do not use software to decide.
  • We publish only reviews from a resident, client, participant or family member whose relationship to the provider we could confirm.
  • We hold a review for three reasons only: we could not confirm the relationship, it names a person's health or private details, or it is abusive. We never hold a review because of its rating.
  • Every listing shows how many reviews were received and how many were published, and the reasons for any held.
  • Reviews appear newest first. The provider can reply in public and cannot edit or remove a review.
  • We do not solicit reviews for any provider, and providers may not offer anything for a review.

Connected listings

Some providers run their day-to-day operations on software. Where that software can connect to a CareBegins listing, the provider can switch it on so that a message you send reaches them directly in the tool they already use, and so they can post open jobs and reply to reviews from there. At the moment the software that can connect is CareBravo, made by Caryfy.

[Decision pending: either "Karavista receives no payment from Caryfy or from any provider for this" or "Karavista receives a fee from Caryfy for each connected listing". One of the two sentences goes here, and nothing in between.] A connected listing is not ordered, marked or rated any differently from any other listing, and the section it adds is labeled "through the provider's connected software" wherever it appears. Ratings a provider collects inside its own software are not shown here and do not count toward anything on this site.

Inspections and sanctions

Every licensed home and center links to its state record, where inspection reports are published, and we show the date of the last inspection. We do not yet summarize findings, because a finding without its context and its resolution can mislead, and the people who live in these homes are vulnerable. We are working on a way to show findings with their meaning, their status and the provider's reply, and we will publish that method here before we switch it on. Until then, the state record is the place to read them, and we always point you there. How to read a state inspection report.

When a state goes live

CareBegins starts in Georgia. A new state is published only when its licensing and Medicaid rosters are complete, its coordinators are all listed and checked, and a named reviewer in that state has signed its guides. We do not publish thin states; a county page with three providers and no sources is worse than no page. Indiana, North Carolina and Michigan are being built.

Corrections

Anyone can report an error from any listing. We fix verified errors within three business days and log every change on the listing and on the corrections log, with the date. Providers can claim their listing and correct it themselves; those changes are labeled as reported by the provider.

Your details

A message you send to a provider goes to that provider only. We do not keep a copy, sell it, or pass it to anyone else. The Wellnior newsletter uses your email for the newsletter and nothing else. We ask you not to put diagnoses or Medicaid numbers in any form on this site. Privacy policy.
